Roberts has second successful surgery
August 13, 2002
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Tuesday that left-winger Gary Roberts underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder on August 7.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Tony Miniacci of Toronto Western Hospital. The Maple Leafs do not expect to have Roberts back in their lineup until February 2003.
"He's going to be fine, but it's a long road back," said Bill Watters told the Toronto Star. "He's going to have to work hard at it, but you know he will."
SKILLS FIRST CHALLENGE
The Skills First Challenge is a pilot project grown out of the Toronto Maple Leafs commitment to promoting 'skills are fun' to minor hockey players and on January 21, 2002 the Leafs hosted a minor hockey Skills First Challenge at the Air Canada Centre. The next Challenge will be held in January 2003.
With particular importance of skill development for 10 and 11 year-olds, this year's program focused on the Atom Division (minor and major Atom). The Leafs put together five skill challenges for skaters, five for goalies and, in addition to the description of challenges, provided a manual which included a series of drills for the Atom coaches use in team practices to help players develop the skills which will be tested.
Following this clinic, the Leafs conducted their annual SuperSkills Challenge.
This popular and fun event allows fans to come out and watch their favourite Leafs players compete in a variety of skills contests including fastest skater, hardest shot and most accurate shooter.
Joining the Leafs on this project are the Ontario Centre of Excellence, Ontario Hockey Federation, Ontario Minor Hockey Association, Ontario Women's Hockey Association, Greater Toronto Hockey League, Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario and the Ontario Hockey League and our sponsors. For more information on how to receive your Skills First Challenge contact your hockey Association or call (416) 815-5755 or (416) 815-5401.
MINOR HOCKEY FESTIVAL
We created the Minor Hockey Festival --- "Coaches helping Coaches" --- for minor hockey coaches across Ontario and Canada.
Imagine being a part of the largest meeting of hockey coaches in North America. Here's a chance to get minor hockey coaches more comfortable with practices with on-ice demonstrations of model practices by top coaches, including two of the NHL's best, Pat Quinn of the Leafs and Jacques Martin of the Ottawa Senators. They will use microphones to explain the what and why of everything they do. There will also be other development sessions on and off-ice throughout the day.
This event will take place at Air Canada Centre on September 22, 2002 and it is totally FREE! If you would like to join us, simply print out the registration form and fax it to (416) 359-9331. For more information please call (416) 815-6170 or send us an email.
